Former UW athlete diagnosed with cancer

Weston Johnson is a former Cowboy team captain, graduate assistant coach and UW business school graduate. Johnson played football for UW from 2005 to 2009.

Weston Johnson, a former football player for the University of Wyoming and the current head football coach at Sheridan High School has recently been diagnosed with metastatic cancer.

According to Johnson’s former athletic profile, he was a native to Wray, Colo. He moved to Sheridan this past year where he now coaches high school’s football team. Johnson attended UW from 2005 to 2009, where he played football.

Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from UW and was named the Outstanding Senior in Marketing by the UW College of Business. He was captain of Wyoming’s 2009 New Mexico Bowl Championship team his senior season. He signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in the spring of 2010 and served as a graduate assistant football coach at UW in 2011.

As Johnson finds himself with a long road ahead of him, friends and family have establish several opportunities for people to help contribute funds to help pay for the extensive medical costs the family is facing.

Poke fans and supporters can help the Johnson family by sending tax-deductible donations to  the Plano Land Trust Weston Johnson Fund. There also is a Weston Johnson Benefit Raffle, which consists of the Sheridan High School football staff, the Sheridan Booster Club, the Big Horn High School football staff, the University of Wyoming’s athletic department, the Cowboy Joe Club and a host of NFL stars. The proceeds of the raffle go towards helping the Johnson’s financial setback.

The raffle includes an assortment of items such as NFL apparel from former UW players Chris Prosinski (Jacksonville Jaguars), Mitch Unrein (Denver Broncos) and John Wendling (Detroit Lions), as well as items from Brett Keisel (Pittsburgh Steelers), Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers) and more, according the raffle list.

Contributions from the UW Athletics Department and the Cowboy Joe Club have also offered gear for the raffle in addition to Wildcatter Stadium Club and Suite seats, game tickets and other various items.

There also is a t-shirt sale fundraiser, which includes brown shirts that have the phrase “Never Flinch” printed in gold lettering, the famous words that inspire Weston and his family that they will make it through this rough patch.
