ASUW Update

ASUW LogoSenators met last night in the business building for an “away meeting” to discuss upcoming bills, RSO requests and events for the following weeks. They also invited two special guest speakers on behalf of the Student Athletics Advisory Committee to discuss the athletics program statistics for Fall 2013.

– The speakers discussed the 492 athletes in the fall and 17 squads that were playing last fall. They also mentioned that 350 of the student athletes were on full-ride scholarships and spoke on the rumor of that all athletes get full-rides, saying that it is definitely false.

– Athletics won two NCAA scholarships this past fall, which are highly sought after.

– Statistically– University of Wyoming Athletes most popular majors are in Engineering and Computer Sciences along with the COJO department.

– They concluded by mentioning that Coach Bohl is eager to have more young men walk onto the football team next fall.

– President Kahler discussed his next week events. He will interview candidates for the dean of students next week along with picking a student  for a full-ride to China for ambassador program. Monday he will go to the Board of Trustees meeting to listen in on their discussion of the tuition and student fees. Finally, Kahler will discuss with Senator Iverland and Barker on a resolution for student fees by Thursday.

– Residence Halls will be hosting a Harry Potter week in April for students.

– Senators funded four requests for RSOs. The first passed a request of $1,000 to Phi Alpha Beta for the UW history club conference. The group showed  that it would be good for all students. This event will promote education and history by expanding to Colorado, Nebraska and the Wyoming area. They will come present to their work and get awards.

– The second request passed for the amount of $1,370 for the Woman’s Law Forum’s summit. This event will bring awareness to equality for men and woman in careers. The key note speaker will be Kate Fox, who recently was inducted as a supreme court justice in Wyoming.

– $2,267.80 was granted to the Advocates and Health RSO for their same-sex panel of discussion. This is a new organization on campus started by the Law school and will bring legal policies to the event for discussion, mostly on same sex. This will take place at the end of March.

– Lastly, the senators passed a request for $1,500 for the Relay for Life Wyoming team at the university. This college team will raise money for cancer via a fund raising walk. Last year the event had 60 teams and over 300 participants. They have already raised $1100 for the event. It will take place April 4 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the UniWyo field house.
