Column: How-To: Stay in shape, eat right over summer

Despite an unwelcome snowstorm this weekend, it is true that summer is just around the corner.

The time for shorts, sleeveless shirts and swimsuits is upon us.

The big thing that everyone worries about for the summer is being in shape. We all want to be looking good in those slinky sundresses or dashing board shorts.

It is widespread in this day and age that unhealthy weight loss measures – such as bulimia and anorexia – are exactly the wrong way to go if you’re looking to drop a couple waist sizes. Really the key to being in shape is being healthy overall. Don’t be so shocked; they do actually go hand in hand.

The thing most newbie weight watchers overlook is that eating healthy is really quite easy, especially in the summer. With fresh fruits and vegetables in season, it couldn’t be easier.

Every summer, Laramie has a downtown farmer’s market on Friday afternoons. Shoppers can get fresh fruit and vegetables grown right here in the Laramie Valley. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.

You can also get fresh homemade bread, a much healthier alternative to whatever Wal-Mart’s offering these days.

In addition to the farmer’s market, Laramie also has the co-op, which is open year round. Big Hollow Food is a great place to get everything from local meats to locally brewed cold brew coffee. This coffee, is less acidic than regular brewed coffee and therefore has more flavor, while the lack of acid makes it better for you.

With the fresh produce from the farmers market and the rest of your healthy foods from Big Hollow, you have the ingredients for some killer meals. Dash on some seasonings and you should be able to create some pretty delicious and healthy meals. Hello fast track to being healthy and rocking that swimsuit.

Exercising is also a key part of living a healthy lifestyle and being fit. With Happy Jack and the Snowy Mountain Range just a few miles on either side of Laramie, there is no excuse for a lazy life. Get outside and take a walk. Alone or with friends, either way you’ll be glad you did.
