The Cowgirl golf team finished 10th with a score of 943 (79-over) this past weekend at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif.

“I was really pleased with the way we moved up,” said head coach Josey Stender.  “The weather was rough once again [as was last tournament] and we scored much better in those conditions.”

Wyoming was led by redshirt freshman Gabrielle Gibson who captured her first top-15 finish of her career as she fired a 231 (15-over) which was good enough for a tie for 14th.  She showed consistency carding consecutive 76s (4-over) in rounds one and two and then finishing up with a 79 (7-over).  Gibson was tied for third for most birdies in the field with seven.

Placing second for the Cowgirls and in a tie for 28th overall was senior Samantha Stancato who shot a 235 (19-over).  She, like her teammate Gibson, showed consistency with scores of 77 (5-over), 79 (7-over) and 79 (7-over).

Not factoring in the team score and playing as an individual was freshman Sarah Hankins.  Hankins was the highest finishing individual golfer tying for 36th with a score of 237 (21-over).  She shot a second round score of 83 (11-over) with rounds of 78 (6-over) and 76 (4-over). She holed the fifth most birdies in the field with five and tied for second in par-3 scoring at even par.

Coming in third on the team and tying for 39th overall was sophomore Taylor Dorans with a score of 238 (22-over).  She progressively got better as the tournament went on firing rounds of 81 (9-over), 80 (8-over) and 77 (5-over).  Dorans tied for first in par-3 scoring with a combined score of 1-under.

One stroke behind Dorans was sophomore teammate Mackenzie Barrie who finished up with a score of 239 (23-over).  Barrie saved her best round for last as she shot a closing round 76 (4-over).  She shot an 82 (10-over) and an 81 (9-over) in her first two rounds.

Rounding out the Cowgirl scorers was junior Kathleen Kershisnik who fired a 253 (37-over).  She played consistently throughout the tournament carding rounds of 86 (14-over), 83 (11-over) and 84 (12-over).

Playing as an individual and finishing in a tie for 84th was junior Emily Woodward.  She booked a second round 80 (8-over) with rounds of 87 (12-over) and 86 (16-over).

Capturing the individual title was senior Megan Osland of San Jose State who carded a 217 (1-over).  Tying for second, seven strokes behind Osland, was Charlotte Jaengkit, senior, of Grand Canyon University and San Jose States’s Elizabeth Schultz, freshman, who both fired a 224 (8-over).

Osland’s Spartans took home the team crown with a score of 893 (29-over).  The Spartans were 24 strokes ahead of the second place tram of New Mexico State who shot a 917 (53-over).  Rounding out the top three was College of Charleston who fired a 919 (55-over).

“We were really just a few short putts away from finishing in the top-5,” said Stender.

Wyoming will be back on the course on Oct. 7-8 in Las Cruces, N.M. at the New Mexico State Price’s “Give ‘Em Five”.
