Cross Country Team Underperforms in Indiana

Senior Holly Page highlighted Wyoming Cross Country’s performance this past weekend at the Indiana State Pre-National Invite.

“Overall the results are not what we wanted today,” head coach Bryan Berryhill said. “We raced a lot better in the first three races than we did today.”

Page’s 6k time of 21:21 and her 35th place finish paced the Cowgirls to a 19th place finish. This marked the 16th consecutive race that the senior has led the Cowgirls.

Wyoming as a team finished with a total time 1:50:09.  Their average time for the Cowgirls was 22:01.

“The women had a slow start, but ran a great last half,” Berryhill said. “When you are competing against the best teams in the nation you have to run the whole race.”

Coming in second for the Cowgirls and 69th overall was freshman Kerry White with a time of 21:46. Junior Audra DeStefano was next with a time of 22:13 placing her 120th. Closely following DeStefano was sophomore Megan Brunette who clocked in at 22:20 earning her a 144th place finish. Placing fifth for Wyoming and 155th overall was another sophomore Ali Walker who ran a time of 22:26. Next Cowgirl finisher was freshman Lauren Hamilton who crossed 174th overall while recoding a time of 22:34. Rounding out the Cowgirl team was senior Devon England who ran a time of 24:14 placing her 285th.

Taking home the team crown was the No. 4 team in the country the Georgetown Hoyas with 110 points.  Placing second with a score of 139 points was No. 3 Oregon.  Rounding out the top three was the No. 1 team in the country Michigan with 143 points.

In the mens 8k race junior Amos Bowen headed the Wyoming team attack with a 98th place finish.  He clocked in with a time of 25:26.

Wyoming, as a team, finished 32nd with a total time of 2:09:12.  The team’s average pace was 25:20.

Following Bowen was junior Mike Seas who crossed with a time of 25:41 good enough for 136th place. Right on Seas’ heals was freshman Jonah Henry who finished 154th while running a time of 25:49. Placing fourth for the Cowboys and 186th overall was junior Dylan Morin who crossed with a time of 26:03. Coming in fifth was sophomore Michael Kesy who ran a time of 26:12 placing him 208th overall. Redshirt freshman Garret Westlake was next for Wyoming crossing 264th with a time of 26:44. Rounding out the seven racers was redshirt sophomore Alex Pawlak who clocked in at 27:05 earning him a 286th place finish.

“Amos did not have his best race, but he will bounce back,” Berryhill said. “Our two-through-five went out there today and fought hard.”

Racing to first place honors with a time of 24:04 was sophomore Edward Cheserek of Oregon.  Not far behind him was Colorado senior Blake Theroux who ran a time of 24:06.  Rounding out the top three was another Duck, redshirt senior, Eric Jenkins who clocked in at 24:09.

Baylor senior Rachel Johnson captured the individual championship honor by racing a time of 20:21. She was 15 seconds ahead of the second place finisher sophomore Megan Curham of Princeton who finished up at 20:36.  Rounding out the top three was senior Katrina Coogan of Georgetown who crossed with a time of 20:37

Capturing the team title with a score of 35 points was the No. 1 team in the country, the Colorado Buffalos. The second place team, and No. 2 team in the country, Oregon was 56 points behind the Buffaloes with 91 points. Georgetown rounded out the top three with 148 points.

Wyoming will compete next at the Mountain West Championships in Fresno, Calif. on Oct. 31.
