Last Thursday the Wyoming Cowgirls volleyball team got a five set win (24-26, 25-22, 25-9, 25-27, 18-16) against the Boise State Broncos. Wyoming improved their record to 18-5 and 7-3 in the Mountain West Conference.

“This match was so intense. There was so much ebb and flow to the match,” head coach Chad Callihan said.

The first began with each team going back and forth, until Wyoming went on a 6-2 run and had a four point lead. The Broncos started to make a small come back, but Wyoming would soon find themselves with a 21-16 lead. The Broncos fought back and ended up winning the first set 24-26.

Wyoming found themselves with a lead to begin the second set and the Broncos were able to fight back again. Wyoming then had a 4-0 run that put them up five. The Broncos were able to come back and tie it up again. The Cowgirls were able to pull away in the end and tie things up at 1-1.

The third set was all Wyoming. Wyoming had leads of 5-1 and 14-2, and was able to close out the match on an 11-5 run. Wyoming won the third set 25-9 and took a 2-1 match lead.

In the fourth set there was a different story with the Broncos being the ones to take an early lead. Wyoming was able to even it up, but the Broncos were able to take an 11-6 lead. The Cowgirls would not go away though and were able to take a one point lead. The two squads went back and forth until the Broncos took the fourth set and was able to tie things up at 2-2.

Wyoming had the lead to begin the fifth and final set, but yet again gave it away to the Broncos. There were three different lead changes in this set and Wyoming was able to win it in the end. They won the set 18-16 and won the match 3-2.

Four Cowgirls had double digits in both kills and points and senior Erin Kirby lead them in both.

“Sports are such an up and down game. The fact that our score resets at the beginning of each set, you beat a team 25-9, feel great about yourself and turn around to lose the next one 26-24. Either way you have to be able to come out, refocus and bring the energy every time. It was a challenge for us today, but we made the plays when we had to,” head coach Callihan said.

Wyoming will start a two game road trip this weekend beginning in UNLV and then head to San Diego to play the San Diego State Aztecs.
