UW makes a mark in college rodeo finals

Three riders from the UW Rodeo Team made it to the College National Finals Rodeo last week, and Brady Dinwoodie finished fourth in the nation in saddle bronc riding.

For the group, all seniors, making it to the finals was bittersweet, but steer wrestler Tylor Bond said he was “glad everyone did good.”

Brady Dinwoodie, Tylor Bond and team roper Brit Ellerman did not win their events but said they were happy to be part of the finals rodeo.

Bond said not many competitors make it to such a high level and he was pleased to be “one of the few who did make it.”

Bond and Ellerman did not make it past the first round of the competition, and while Dinwoodie placed 11th in the first round and 15th in the second round, he did much better in the third round with 73 points out of 100.

Dinwoodie missed being second in the nation after not “marking” his horse out of the gate. Per PRCA rules, a competitor must begin the ride with his spurs above the horse’s shoulders, which Dinwoodie failed to do in the short go.

Dinwoodie, a transfer student from Saskatchewan, Canada, said his performance “was good overall.”

Howard said all three men would be finishing their degrees and college rodeo at the end of the season.

Bond said he was happy he made the competition as a senior, but wishes he had another opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.

Brady Dinwoodie spurs a saddle bronc at a rodeo this season. He qualified for the CNFR in first place in the region, significantly ahead of other bronc riders.
