Staff senate talks budget, trustees approve medical spending

Wednesday both the staff senate and board of trustees met to discuss university spending.

The board of trustees approved an increase in funding to the universities’ medical program in a conference call. The proposal seeks to use funds for medical, dental and nursing students.

The UW Staff Senate met to discuss the biannual budget that will be presented to Gov. Mead in September. Some members of the staff expressed concern about whether or not UW will receive the budget they are asking for.

“This state is gonna’ have a lot of trouble going forward,” Vice President Mark Gunnerson said about the current state of the Wyoming coal industry.

The budget proposal allots money for building, maintenance and operations.

The current budget allocates $15 million to replace UW’s research aircraft, $3 million for Information and technology update and $200 million per phase of the three-phase dorm replacement plan. Funds were also allotted for acquisition of properties’s north of Lewis St.

In addition to the budget, staff senate addressed the Half Acre expected completion date of May 2016.

The transit department at UW made a motion for there to be an increase in auxiliary service funds in order to improve the UW bus fleet.

“I would like to hear more discussion about the transportation budget,” Sen. Hendrik said during the meeting.

The motion was then held and scheduled for the fall meeting.

The board of trustees first presidential search committee will meet next Wednesday in Old Main in a closed meeting to select 10 to 15 presidential candidates.
