Cowgirl Tennis finds victory in Athens

Cowgirls tennis bounced back following their loss to Georgia in a comeback win to number 65 ranked Tulane in the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Georgia. Wyoming pulled off a 4-3 victory in consolation rounds Saturday.

 

“I’m really proud of the way we competed as a team,” Cowgirls head coach Dean Clower said following Saturday’s match. “We are continually getting better at making the right decisions. Magdalena and Dorottya showed what it takes to win at this level and the underclassmen have followed suite. We will travel home tomorrow and the team will get a well-deserved day off.”

 

Swinging off in doubles, freshman Elisa Koonik and freshman Tessa van Der Ploeg pulled in the first Wyoming win of the weekend, 6-3 over Tulane’s Kyla Klier and Jacqui Katz. Sealing off the doubles point for Wyoming was sophomore Magdalena Stencel and senior Nastya Tokareva in another 6-3 takeover of Tulane duo Sade Atkinson and Ipek Birol.

 

Junior Miranda Talbert and junior Dorottya Jonas were dead even at 4-4 with Elena Muller and Naz Karagoz in their doubles match when Wyoming took the doubles point, their match went unfinished.

 

The Cowgirls momentum carried into singles matches as the Cowgirls took 3 of the six matches, and taking the overall Tulane match.

 

Wyoming took wins in the third, first and sixth slot.

 

Jonas overtook Birol in the first slot in a straight set 6-0, 6-3 to take the first singles point for Wyoming. She was followed by Stencel who beat Karagoz in a set of three 3-6, 7-5 and 6-4.

 

Wrapping up the win for the Cowgirls was van Der Ploeg with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Tulane’s Meredith Maltby.

 

Tokaeva fell to Klier in a set of three 7-5, 0-6, 6-1. Koonik fell short to Muller 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 and Talbert took a loss 6-0, 6-0 to Tulane opponent Katz.

 

The Cowgirls will return to action Feb. 6 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Cowgirls will go toe-to-toe against the UMKC Kangaroos, the match is set to start at 6 p.m.
