Track & Field compete in Mountain West Championship

Senior Scott Carter successfully repeated as men’s triple jump champion, while senior Cassidy Meade and the men’s 4×400 relay team set new UW records on the final day of the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 25.

The Cowgirls finished in 10th place with 36 points, while the Cowboys finished in fifth place with 60 points. 23 of those 60 points for the Cowboys were from Carter.

“Scott’s been a big contributor for this program his whole career, so for him to go out today and win the triple jump title is pretty special,” head coach Bryan Berryhill said. “He’s a special athlete, and we appreciate everything he’s done for us over his career.”

Carter jumped 50 feet, 8.25 inches to take home his second consecutive MW title in the triple jump, defeating the next closest competitor by three inches. Carter also placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, with a personal best time of 7.95 seconds, which is tied for third on the all-time UW list. Senior Jordan Charles took home All-MW honors in the event, placing second with a time of 7.80 seconds.

Sophomore Jerayah Davis took home runner up finishes in the women’s long jump and the women’s 60 meters, recording a time of 7.30 seconds in the finals. Sophomore Jackson Wood was a point scorer for the Pokes, taking eighth in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 48.70 seconds.

The men’s 4×400 team of Wood, Jace Marx, Kevin Blackett and Bryce Ailshie took home all-conference honors by taking third place with a time of 3:13.46, which broke a 17-year-old school record. Ailshie also earned individual All-MW with a third place finish in the 800 meters, with an adjusted time of 1:49.57, which is good for the fourth best time in UW history.

“They went out there and competed,” Berryhill said of the men’s 4×400-meter relay team. “To be at the end of the meet and have that much energy, for them to go out there a little bit tired and get the school record, that says a lot about who they are.”

Meade established a new Wyoming record in the 800 meters with an adjusted time of 2:09.77, which was good for fifth place. Kerry White added another point for the Cowgirls by finishing eighth. In the women’s 3000 meter run, Megan Brunette posted a personal record with a time of 9:50.27, which was good for fifth all-time on the UW list.

“Cassidy [Meade] a great kid,” Berryhill said. “She’s gotten better and better each year. Right before the race, I said ‘hey, let’s go get the school record,’ and she said, ‘well, it’s my last chace.’ So that was pretty neat.””

Any qualifying Wyoming athletes will compete next at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships from March 10-11 in College Station, Texas. The UW track and field team will begin its outdoor season on March 17-18 at the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder, Colorado.
