Cowgirl tennis sweeps weekend opponents

On this last Friday and Sunday, the Cowgirls tennis team took to the road to face and defeat both the Utah State Aggies and the Boise State Broncos.

The matchup against Utah State marked the first Mountain West matchup for UW, and it took place in Logan, Utah.

“The team was phenomenal today in the way they went about business,” head coach Dean Clower said. “From last night’s warm-up to the match the team was all business.”

In the singles competitions, the Pokes swept USU, with five out of the six matchups ending after only two sets. In the match between UW’s Milka Genkova and USU’s Lucy Octave, Genkova dropped the first set, but battled back to take the win over Octave after three more sets.

In doubles competition, the pokes won two of the three matches. In the match between UW’s Dorottya Jonas and Ana Tkachenko versus USU’s Nini Guensler and Sabrina Demarath, USU had a 5-2 lead when the match was called and remained unfinished.

“During the match, we executed what we have been working on all year,” Clower said. “I can’t be more proud of the effort each person has put into getting to the level they have. Utah State is well-coached team and to beat them on the road in Logan is no small task.”

The Pokes ended up defeating USU 7-0 to take the first conference win in their first conference matchup. Following the game against USU, the Cowgirls traveled to Boise, Idaho for another conference matchup. This matchup was a little closer, and Boise went down swinging.

“The team didn’t play especially well today, but, like true champions, reached down and found ways to win,” Clower said.

Sundays matchups started with the doubles teams trading very close sets. The Pokes took two out of three of the doubles matchups with scores of 7-6 (7-5) and 6-1, and a loss at 6-4 in favor of BSU. In singles, Cowgirls Ana Tkachenko, Milka Genkova and Dorttya Jonas won their matchups to add three points to the total. With the doubles wins, the UW narrowly edged past BSU 4-3 to win their second conference matchup in a row.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of the way each individual found ways to get it done today,” Clower said. “Once again, our depth shined. We have eight highly competitive athletes that can get it done anywhere, anytime on any court.”

Following the win against Boise, the Pokes improved their record to 14-3 overall and 2-0 in the MWC. The team will take a short break from competition, but will continue their conference matchups with a matchup against New Mexico on Friday, April 14 in the UW Indoor Tennis Complex.
