UW admissions on the rise

The University of Wyoming has seen increased enrollments and admissions this past year. There are many thoughts and ideas as to why there has been a rise in enrollment between the semesters.

“I’ve noticed an increase in recruiting efforts more so than in past years. We’ve done many more calling campaigns to inform students about upcoming events. As well as trying to accommodate the incoming students,” Student Ambassador for the Tomé Student Admissions Center, Andy Holsinger said.

The university has introduced new programs to recruit more students such as the campus pass. Campus pass is a program that allows prospective students to go on a tour across campus, learn more about the admissions process, have lunch at Washakie dining center and prospective students get a complimentary ticket to the football game that weekend.

The university also does Discovery Days for prospective students. Discovery days is a Saturday event that prospective families may come and be introduced to the college community in a group setting while helping students learn about campus programs and groups that they may join.

“Saturday events have had more perspective students than in years past. The campus pass showcasing, UW had 759 people at the event, that’s more than I remember,” Holsinger said.

UW has also seen a rise in campus visits based on how well the Cowboys do. Football games are a large part of college life so it’s no surprise that they factor into the number of enrollments and admissions.

“With the team having the success from last year, more prospective students visit the campus,” Events Coordinator, Amy Fenolia said.

There is such a noticeable correlation between the Cowboy’s success in their past seasons and the increase in enrollments and admissions. Many people throughout campus cite it as one of the main reasons that enrollment is on the rise.

“The visits of prospective students increase when we win football games,” Professor Ali Scovil said.

Admissions is definitely on the rise because of football games. If the Cowboys win more games, we could definitely see a rise in enrollment and visits to the university.

“This was expected to be the biggest freshman class this year. We had over 13,000 people enrolled over the 2013-2014 school year. I believe Dr. Nichols has a goal in mind for future, maybe 14,000,” Holsinger said.

Admission is expected to rise as the university continues its recruitment efforts. If these recruitment efforts are successful the university could easily reach the goal of 14,000 enrolled students.
