Poetry slam seeks to raise attendance

This poetry slam will be held in the Gardens of the Union Building so as to give off the coffee shop atmosphere that seems so present within the culture of these events.
On Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 8 p.m. till 9:30 p.m., 7220 Entertainment will be hosting a poetry slam.
A poetry slam is a competition where poets recite original works; poetry slams began in Chicago in the 1980s and they were designed to transition poetry recitals from solely an academic audience to a more popular and mainstream audience.
These poetry slams are judged by a panel of judges usually selected from the audience at random. This poetry slam will be judged by our very own President Laurie Nichols, one of last year’s poetry slam winners and a student volunteer from 7220.
In past years this event is held in the spring. This year’s event is going to be more low-key so that more people have the opportunity to attend. This event is a community-inclusive social event that is primarily student-based.
This event is free of charge for everyone who wishes to attend yet only students are permitted to present their original poetry at this event. Students are invited to submit their original work of poetry for the poetry slam and have a chance to win a cash prize for the top three poets at the event. This event is mainly just for student entertainment.
“We are really going for the coffee shop vibe so it’s very laid back. There will be food and drinks also to add to the atmosphere of it all,” Member of 7220 Entertainment, Amanda Byzewski, said.
The grand prize is a total of 200 dollars, the second-place prize is 100 dollars and the third-place prize is 50 dollars. Students are welcome to sign up right up until the day of the poetry slam itself and are permitted to submit their work. Registration is entirely on a first come, first served basis.
“I wish I was better at poetry so that I could participate. But it still sounds like a good time, so I will definitely be there,” UW student, Tristan Schooner, said.
This event is hosted by The University of Wyoming’s very own student organization 7220 Entertainment. The subset of the entire organization that is running the event is the Fine Arts and Lectures Committee.
This committee is responsible for involving the community of Laramie and the Community of UW in different thought-provoking lectures and free cultural, artistic, and educational programs that are necessary for improvement throughout society.
The purpose of this committee, within 7220 Entertainment, is to provide fun cultural opportunities that are purely unique to our campus and community as a whole. This committee is also in charge of the exhibits within the Wyoming Union Gallery 234.
This group meets Mondays at 4:15 p.m. in the Union Building room 012 throughout the year. This group is partnered with the Campus Activities Center that strives to make campus a fun and event-filled place that allows for students to get involved.
Be at the Union Gardens to be immersed into the atmosphere of talented poets sharing their work and enjoy a night full of poetry Wednesday at 8 p.m.
