Outdoor program to hold ski, snowboard tuning clinic

The University of Wyoming Outdoor Program will hold a ski and snowboard tuning clinic to give students an opportunity to prepare their equipment for the upcoming ski and snowboard season.

Although local ski resorts have yet to open their doors, current University of Wyoming students are already preparing for the upcoming season with the Outdoor Program.

“I love the Outdoor Program, and have gone on a trip as well as rented from them,” Jolie Surber, University of Wyoming student and avid outdoor enthusiast, said. “I only ski a handful of times each year, but have considered going to an Outdoor Program ski tuning clinic.”

The clinics give skiers and boarders the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of waxing skis and snowboards from on-site ski technicians.

“There are two clinics this semester,” Travis Kolbo, the leader of the Outdoor Program event, said. “The time and date of those are Nov. 15 and Nov. 29 from 6-8 p.m.”

Each clinic will cover the basics of equipment preparation. This includes wax selection, application, scraping and brushing.

Outdoor Program experts will also go over edge tuning and fundamental base repair.

Wax and necessary supplies will be provided to those who attend, although they are required to bring their own skis and snowboards.

The clinic will be open to different ski and snowboard varieties, including “alpine skis, Nordic, all-terrain skis and snowboards,” Kolbo said.

The Outdoor Program staff confirmed that the clinics will take place at the Outdoor Program office in Half Acre Gym and Recreation Center. Session prices will be $5 for students and $7 for faculty and staff.

In addition to the ski tuning clinics, the Outdoor Program offers a variety of ski and snowboard-related activities beginning in the spring semester. These vary from a shuttle to Snowy Range Ski Area to a backcountry ski and snowboard trip.

For those wishing to get their season started early, the Outdoor Program will be hosting additional events in the upcoming weeks, including “an avalanche beacon clinic and a classic cross-country ski technique clinic,” stated Kolbo.

These will occur on Tuesday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Dec. 9.

Additional ski and snowboard tuning clinics will occur on Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 21. Each session is limited to eight participants each.
