Sigma Chi hosts the ‘Souper Cheesy’ Fundraiser

All you can eat grilled cheese and tomato soup, just $5 on Sunday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. hosted by Sigma Chi Fraternity; with the money raised going toward the Huntsman Cancer Institute for cancer research.

“One of our brothers, Andrew Potter, came up with the idea around 4 years ago and it has been going on since then, all of our money goes to the cancer research project,” Special Events Chairman, Scott Lewis said.

This annual event has been established as the Souper Cheesy Fundraiser

“Things like burgers and hotdogs are too overrated so we decided to move toward some comfort food, like grilled cheese and soup that people can enjoy in this cold weather while donating money to charity,” also a Special Events Chairman, Thomas Suhr said. “We always had Derby Days as our spring fundraiser but to raise more money we decided to start one in the fall too so we would have more to give to the Huntsman cancer research.”

Huntsman Cancer Institute is an NCI-designated cancer research facility and hospital located on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. It is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in the Intermountain West.

“Our main charity has always been the Huntsman Institute. A fellow brother Jon Huntsman started the institute for cancer research and got Sigma Chi involved in it,” Lewis said.

For convenience their event will be taking place in the Sigma Chi House, located at 1629 E Fraternity Row, Laramie, WY.

UW Sigma Chi was established on campus in 1930, making it the longest-standing fraternity on campus. They have a very diverse membership and their members are involved in many groups around campus like the ASUW, Intramurals, Global Business Club, UW Ski Club, Honor’s Program, Iron Skull Honorary, International Students Association and many more.

Another one of their bigger events is the Derby Days, a weeklong philanthropic event. Sigma Chi was the top fundraising fraternity at UW for the 2014-2015 school year. They also work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters, hosting a pumpkin carving, sled derby, and other events with the local kids.

Sigma Chi welcomes a large diversity of students into their brotherhood. Their core values are friendship, justice and learning. They are the only fraternity with an automatic scholarship program for brothers, in which those eligible receive up to $700 automatically.

They are also involved in community service, which can be seen through their engagement with their fundraisers every semester. They have been attempting to spread the word around campus to get more students to join their event and raise as much money as possible.

“In weather like this grilled cheese and tomato soup sounds amazing and the fact that all money goes to charity makes it even better,” UW student, Suyasha Pradhananga, said.

Their involvement in many RSOs around campus also give them a chance to spread the word on their event with a cause. Many members hold positions on the student governing body and many are active in other student organizations.

“We are super excited and we hope we have a lot of students come in to enjoy our event and raise money for a good cause,” Lewis said.

Tickets for the event are available through the Union Information desk, or can be collected from current members and will also be distributed at the door on the day of the event.
