Wyoming banks weathered the 2008 financial crises more successfully than national banks, but students worried about the availability of loans to pay for school and their job prospects after graduation. ● ASUW planned to revive a student-run radio station for campus. ● Margaret “Canopy Meg” Lowman, an international tropical forest researcher, was the keynote speaker at the Honors Convocation. ● Cowboy offense was ranked 119th in the country, the worst in Division I-A.

 

20 years ago…

BI reported on the “brutal” beating of 21-year-old UW student Matthew Shepard, who at time of press remained in a coma. That week, the Albany County Sheriff deemed it an attempted murder and charged three individuals in connection with the crime. ● Between 500 and 1,000 people attended a candlelight vigil for Shepard. He died in the hospital in Fort Collins. Charges against his attackers were upgraded to first degree murder. ● A year after flash floods wreaked havoc at the campus of CSU, Laramie emergency departments prepared for the chance of flooding. ● UW President Philip Dubois spoke to ASUW about parking solutions and renovating the Wyoming Union. “We need to keep the school attractive and competitive for the future,” Dubois said.

 

50 years ago…

The Student Wives Club held their first meeting of the year in Cheyenne. ● Campus political organizations hosted “Relate ‘68,” a four-day series of “bitch-ins” where students and staff could gather for intellectual conversation. ● The Faculty Senate postponed considering switching to a “Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory” grading system until newly elected senators were instated in office.
