Cowgirls Volleyball Bests CSU to Win Border War

The University of Wyoming Cowgirls volleyball team beat Colorado State 3 – 1 this Tuesday at the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie.

The Cowgirls were led by sophomore Jackie McBride, who had 16 points and 10 kills throughout the four sets.

“It was a great match,” head coach Chad Callihan said. “It was great to be at home; great crowd and a great environment. We played this match here a year ago and we talked about how overexcited we were…I just thought we were in a much different place tonight.”

Going into tonight’s match, junior Madi Fields had 983 digs and became the ninth Cowgirl to reach 1,000 digs, getting 18 tonight.

“They’re a good offensive team and they’re used to seeing the ball hit the floor,” Fields said. “We made an effort to make sure that didn’t happen tonight, and I think that really showed. We kept balls live, setted them up and let our middles get going, and I think that really frustrated them.”

The Cowgirls set the pace for the match in the first set, winning it 25 – 19 after rallying back and forth the whole set. The Cowgirls had 13 kills in the first set, as opposed to CSU’s 14.

The second set was shaping up to be just like the first with the Cowgirls and CSU rallying back and forth for the lead. However, CSU was able to get on a roll late in the set and win 25 – 18. The Cowgirls only had seven kills in the second set, whereas CSU had 15.

The Cowgirls bounced back quickly in the third set, winning 25 – 14. CSU only had nine kills and the Cowgirls had 10.

“It’s kind of crazy how we can bounce back at times,” Callihan said. “We have not been playing what I think is our level.”

The Cowgirls clenched the win in the fourth set with 14 kills, beating CSU 25 – 18.

CSU had 30 attack errors but the Cowgirls only had 11 throughout the whole match. The Cowgirls had 116 total attacks and CSU had 139.

This win leaves the Cowgirls with an 11 – 6 record for the season. The Cowgirls’ next game is against Air Force on Thursday, October 4 at 6:30 pm MST at the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie.
