Fireworks aren’t the only fun Fourth of July activity

The Fourth of July is a time for numerous celebratory events, from barbecues to pool parties to picnics in the park. As the holiday draws closer, it’s important to keep fire safety and the wellbeing of the community in mind.

It’s no secret that one of the most predominant factors of the Fourth of July is fireworks. Each year, numerous firework shows are held throughout the country for spectators to observe. Some folks opt to set off their own fireworks and sparklers in the comfort of their own property.

Although this activity is a tradition for many, it can be a risky choice to make.

According to the Albany County Fire Warden’s website, fireworks are only allowed on privately owned land within Albany County as long as fire restrictions have not been put in place previously. Fireworks are prohibited within the City of Laramie limits.

Along with this, the use of fireworks can result in injuries. As stated by the 2019 Fireworks Annual Report, around 10,000 firework-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospitals throughout the year. Young children and older teens were the age groups affected most by these injuries.

Another view is that not everyone enjoys fireworks. If you are planning to set off fireworks on privately owned land, I implore you to make sure this activity won’t be a trigger to anyone nearby. Having fun is great, but being a good neighbor is even better.

The good news is that you don’t have to set off fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July. Barbecuing, having a picnic with friends, taking a walk downtown to bask in the sunlight, going to the pool or having drinks in the backyard are all awesome ways to relax and have fun.

I also want to mention that the Fourth of July overlaps with Laramie Jubilee Days. If you’re looking for something to do that day, the Ranch Rodeo is being held at Albany County Fairgrounds. The event starts at 10 a.m. and is free to the public.

I encourage readers to keep their safety, the safety of the surrounding environment and the mental health of community members in mind. Fireworks are exciting but setting them off yourself can be a hazardous decision. There are plenty of other activities to take part in to celebrate safely.
