UW hosts “The Cowboy Comeback” alongside Cowboy Connect

Prior UW students who attended their freshmen year here in Laramie might remember the Cowboy Connect event: a week-long series of activities meant to get students comfortable on campus and attached to the UW community.

Freshmen last year didn’t have this chance due to COVID-19 precautions.

The University announced that for rising sophomores, students who entered UW in the Fall of 2020, get to participate in the 2021 Cowboy Connect.

“This should be a good experience. I remember getting to do this as a freshman which is why I was bummed out for those last year who missed,” UW Resident Assistant Brandon Gales said.

The event will be held August 20 through 22, hosting a variety of activities and programs.

“Part of my excitement for Laramie was getting the chance to experience the campus and what it was like,” UW sophomore AJ Turner said. “I’m glad the University is extending an invitation to us to be part of it and make-up for the lost chance.”

August 19 will serve as the move in date for the majority of incoming freshmen.

“It’s our hope that the Cowboy Connect activities that end of the day Thursday and start over the weekend will help ease that transformation and settling in a bit more,” member of Cowboy Connect Laura Grant said.

There will be a ceremony on August 20 for both freshmen and sophomores to sign up for their desired activities.

“The hope is to provide enough experiences or opportunities that no one feels like they don’t have anywhere to go,” Grant said.

Some activities that can be expected include a Vedauwoo Hike, a tour of downtown Laramie, and a UW soccer game.

“We want to try to encourage the students to get out of the dorms those first few days and enjoy as much of campus as possible,” said Gales. “I think having fun on campus early makes it less daunting later.”

Programs such as “Schedules & Snowcones” and “Let’s Talk About Consent” are planned to be held through the weekend.

“At the end of the day, the smoother we can make the transition the better. That’s what Cowboy Connect is about,” Grant said.
