As part of the Homecoming Week and the 75th anniversary of the Union there was a cake eating contest in the breezeway of the Union Thursday from 11.

Seven individuals took their seat as a large plate of chocolate cake was presented to each one of them. Armed with forks and a glass of water, an ASUW leader said start and they were off. After two minutes and cake-covered hands the cake eating contest was over.

The students watched as the seven individuals raced to eat cake, however there would only be one champion. ASUW members helped judge the contest and crowned winners from different heats throughout the 2-hour contest.

A winner of the 12 o’clock heat of the cake eating contest was Dan Marshall. He won the winning prize, and there were also awards for second and third place finishers. Dan entered the contest to help spur on more competition from the students.

“It did not look like they had too many people signed up, so I figured I would have some cake for lunch,” said Area Supervisor for the Union Dan Marshall. “The cake—when you stuffed it into your mouth—was pretty dry, so adding water to the equation was very helpful with it and made it easier to swallow.”

After the competition, cake was distributed to the students to help celebrate both homecoming week and the 75th anniversary. There was both white and chocolate cake and enough for roughly 200 students who passed through the Union.

The event was able to take place due to space provided by the Union and ASUW who helped put this together and work the event. ASUW members were also in the Union working the prize table and giving away free shirts and pizza in culmination for homecoming week.

“Union tenants were given the opportunity to host an event for the 75th anniversary! This is the event ASUW leadership decided to host,” said ASUW Director of Diversity and Outreach Natawsha Mitchell. “I would love to see a lot of student excitement and involvement in this event! I hope it serves as another opportunity for students to get excited for the weekend.”
