Cowgirls soccer post season came to an end in a 1-0 loss to Colorado College in San Diego, California at the SDSU Sports Deck Wednesday. The Cowgirls closed out their regular season 10-5-4, and were fourth in the Mountain West standings, making it to the tournament for the third year in a row.

The Cowgirls originally kicked off quarterfinal action against the Tigers, Tuesday night in a not so sunny San Diego. The match was promptly placed on lightning delay following a lightning strike too close to the field. The teams headed back to their respective clubhouses where they remained for another two hours during continuous rain and lightning until the game was postponed for 10 the next morning.

Wednesday the Cowgirls and the Tigers reset at 90 minutes for match time and were off to the races.

In the first half the Cowgirls kept pace with the Tigers offensive attack, each tallying three shots.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cassidy Entsminger had two saves in the first half and allowed one goal.

The only goal of the match came in the 15th minute of the match by Colorado College forward Clara Richter. The Tiger forward split the Cowgirl defensive line and caught the goalie out of the box, to fire the ball straight into the net.

Tiger’s goalkeeper Louisa MacKenzie had two saves in the first half.

The Cowgirls headed into the locker room down 1-0 at the half.

In the second half the Tigers had five shots on goal to the Cowgirls two but were still unable to get past Entsminger on goal.

Entsminger had one save in the second half making her season total 41 saves.

Wyoming had three corner kicks over the 90-minute match, two in the first and one in the second. None of the three were converted into successful runs for the Cowgirls. The Tigers tallied two corner kicks in the first half.

Sophomore forward Shaina Ashouri led the Cowgirls with two shots on goal. Ashouri, named First Team All-Conference earlier in the week, had 67 shots this year, the most for a Cowgirl since 2004.

Freshman forward Annika Clayton also tallied one shot on goal out of the Cowgirls five shots, three on goal.

Despite the loss the Cowgirl’s ended the season at new heights, including highest single-season shutouts having eight this year. Cowgirl soccer will return in the spring.
