Laramie and the campus community remembered Matthew Shepard, 10 years after his murder. ● Student representatives from two Shanghai universities planned to visit UW. ● A New York rabbi led Laramie’s Yom Kippur service, the celebration of the Jewish New Year.

 

20 years ago…

The Union held a panel discussion on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, titled “Sex, Lies and Videotape, The Mess in Washington: The View from Wyoming.” In a Gallup poll, 29 percent of respondents said President Clinton should be impeached. ● The Homecoming theme was 1950s, with activities including a sock hop, lip sync contest and showing of “Grease.” ● ASUW addressed plans for funding renovations to the Wyoming Union and potential solutions to perennial parking complaints. ● Two new fraternities were created, Theta Xi and Lambda Chi, with a focus on academics over alcohol.

 

50 years ago…

“The adolescent male ego seems rampant on campus,” lamented William Hart in his column for women. In his view, male egotism was preventing women from getting equal satisfaction in sexual encounters. ● Dean R. E. Kinder expressed his support of “bitch-ins,” where students gathered at the Union were permitted 10 minutes to speak on any subject. ● UW was awarded $14,272 ($103,790 today) by the U.S. Department of Health to study the taste sensitivity of mosquitoes. ● Participants in “Operation Crossroads of Africa,” a program where American students travel to Africa and meet with African students to counter mutual preconceptions, reflected on their experiences. ● A group of UW researchers planned a trip to Antarctica to study rock formations and test the theory of “continental drift.” ● The Student Senate passed a bill banning students carrying alcohol from entering athletic events.
