Tribute to Mack Kramer, debate team member and student

On September 7, 2021, Mack Kramer, a beloved member of the UW community, passed away.

Mack was born in Rock Springs and was a sophomore majoring in International Studies at the University of Wyoming. Mack graduated from Rock Springs High School in 2020 and was named Valedictorian.

Throughout their time in high school, Mack played in concert and jazz bands and was selected to All-State Band all four years. Mack was also president of the Rock Springs High School Debate Team during their senior year.

At UW, Mack was a member of the National Honor Society and was also elected president of the UW Debate Team by peers.

“Although Mack had barely a year of Wyoming high school debate experience, they won their first college tournament ever: the 2020 JV division of the Northwestern season opener,” said UW Debate Coach Matthew Liu.

Mack devoted plenty of hard work and dedication to debate and qualified for the 2021 National Debate Tournament.

“They were the quintessential team player and were essential to nearly every Wyoming debate initiative,” Liu said.

Mack also spent hours of their time volunteering to help fellow debaters improve their craft and volunteering in their home city of Rock Springs.

“They had great leadership skills and an overall strong ability to learn. They were just amazing,” said Gentry Smith, a friend of Mack’s. “You compare honors students, and then there’s Mack who was above and beyond. They were the best of the best with everything they did.”

“Mack was the epitome of Wyoming Debate,” Liu said. “They were the heart of the team, and they will be missed dearly.”
