Safe Treat brings fun to Laramie

The community-wide annual Safe Treat, hosted by University of Wyoming Residence Life, the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, and the Wyoming Union, was held on campus last Thursday, October 27th.

Hosted by various campus departments, clubs, and organizations, Safe Treat is an annual event that brings fun to the community, and allows the children of Laramie to safely enjoy many different Halloween-themed games, activities, storytelling, and trick-or-treating.

“We just got here, we came because some friends came,” said Darl Peterson, a Laramie resident who brought his 2-year-old daughter, “We probably won’t do traditional trick-or-treating, especially because she’s only two. Being inside is always nice with the weather around these parts.”

Child-friendly activities were hosted in the lower level of Washakie Dining Center as well as in the Wyoming Union and on UW’s Fraternity and Sorority Mall. Students participating were excited to give back to the local community and take a break from traditional student life.

“It seems like a lot of fun,” Sophie Robertson, UW student and member of Role for Initiative, said “COVID really threw our club through a loop, and we wanted to get our names back out there. We have a lot of games and we think people should check us out.”

All of the events found at Safe Treat were free and open to families, children, and anyone else in the community to explore and appreciate.

“I really like that it’s indoors, trick-or-treating can be a little bit scary at night,” said Amber Riffee, a Laramie resident who brought her son, Eli, to the Union for trick-or-treating. “We love it because there is so much to do.”

Eli Riffee, dressed up in his Halloween costume with a bag full of candy said, “I like it better than normal trick-or-treating because it’s warm and it’s inside so I don’t have to worry about tripping on the sidewalk in the dark. It’s just really chill.”
