Condolences: Dr. Kaitlyn Root

On Friday, Sept. 22, public notice via an email chain to the University of Wyoming Criminal Justice and Sociology programs announced the sudden passing of Dr. Kaitlyn Root.

Dr. Kaitlyn Root was a Sociology Assistant Professional Lecturer teaching a variety of classes intersecting the studies of both sociology and criminal Justice, including topics such as: race and ethnic relations, sociology of education, and an introduction to women’s studies.

Additionally, Dr. Root was known to be interested in a variety of research projects including welfare implementation, and was a co-author in works of the “Sociological Imagination and Poverty and Public Policy,” according to the University of Wyoming staff review page. Although I did not have the pleasure of having Dr. Root as an instructor, some members of the Branding Iron team did.

“Kaitlyn was a very kind person and was always a huge support for her students. She was passionate about what she taught and those who were lucky to have taken her classes will miss her,” said Copy Editor Kelli Frimml.

Furthermore, the email by Eric Wodahl, Department Chair, Department of Criminal Justice & Sociology, stated: “Dr. Root loved teaching and cared very deeply for all her students. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.”

Additionally, the email mentioned the intention of developing an event that will celebrate the life of Dr. Root “and her infectious optimism and enthusiasm.” Resources at this time include the University of Wyoming Counseling Center, 307-766-2187 or 307-766- 8989 for after hours crises, and the Psychology Center, 307-766-2149.

Our condolences go out to the family, friends, staff,
and students affected by this loss.
