Geology and Geophysics hosts alumni reception

The University of Wyoming Geology Museum filled to the brim with staff, students, and alumni of the Geology and Geophysics department for the Homecoming 2023 alumni reception on Friday, Sept. 29.

“Join us at the UW Geological Museum to mingle with alumni, faculty and current students to reminisce about Field Camp and more,” read the poster advertising the event.

The event began at 4:00 p.m. with an optional tour, and continued until 8:30 p.m. with a reception featuring food, drinks, and conversation.
The event also featured a brief speech from acting department head Dr. Dario Grana.

It was one of many Homecoming events centering current students and alumni, which took over the campus this past weekend.

“Despite moving to a different college,” said Dr. Grana, referring to the Geology and Geophysics department’s recent move from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, “we preserve our identity, our department culture, and our legacy.”

Dr. Grana also discussed plans for the future of the department in his remarks. “We’re going to try to do a better job this year in promoting our degrees, doing more marketing, most likely a social media marketing campaign,” said Dr. Grana. Grana also discussed the upcoming department gathering at the railroad depot to celebrate newly retired faculty, which will take place on Oct. 26, 2023.

The museum was decked out in decorations, from cowboy hats on fossils, to pictures of past field camp groups, to posters meant to advertise the department.

“I would like to say a big thank you to the manager of the museum, Laura Vietti, and our event planner […] thanks for organizing this amazing reception, I couldn’t have done it without you,” said Grana.
