Three Wyoming swimmers killed in crash on U.S. 287 in Colorado

U.S. 287, infamously nicknamed the ‘Highway of Death,’ has claimed three more victims.

Thursday afternoon at about 2:46 p.m., three members of the University of Wyoming’s swim and dive team died in a single-vehicle accident along U.S. 287 between Livermore and Virginia Dale, just 10 miles south of the Wyoming border.

The victims were 18-year-old Carson Muir, a freshman on the women’s team and animal and veterinary sciences major from Birmingham, 19-year-old Charlie Clark, a sophomore psychology major from Las Vegas, Nevada, and 21-year-old Luke Slabber, a junior studying construction management from Cape Town, South Africa. Luke Slabber and Charlie Clark were both on the men’s team.

Two additional male passengers, ages 20 and 21 and both on the men’s team, sustained only minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

According to kdvr in Colorado, investigators said the Toyota Rav4 crossed northbound lanes and rolled several times down an embankment, ejecting two people and closing traffic in both directions.

Head coach Dave Denniston said his team is “devastated” following the crash and more information is to be released after families of the victims are notified.
