We welcome letters from readers who wish to respond to our coverage, raise issues of public concern, or contribute to discussion within our community.
Submission Requirements
Letters should:
- Be no longer than 500 words.
- Address a specific issue, article, or topic relevant to our readers.
- Be written by the person submitting the letter.
- Include the writer’s full name, email address, and phone number.
- Include the writer’s city of residence and, when relevant, their connection to the community or institution.
- Be submitted exclusively to our publication or clearly disclose if they have been submitted elsewhere.
Contact information will be used for verification and will not be published without permission.
Editorial Standards
Letters may be edited for length, clarity, grammar, accuracy, and compliance with our editorial standards. Editing will not intentionally change the writer’s meaning or position.
We generally will not publish letters that:
- Contain personal attacks, threats, harassment, or discriminatory language.
- Make unsupported allegations against identifiable individuals or organizations.
- Include knowingly false, misleading, defamatory, or plagiarized material.
- Promote commercial products, services, campaigns, or fundraising efforts.
- Are primarily intended as organizational press releases or political advertisements.
- Include excessive profanity or graphic content.
- Have already been published elsewhere.
- Are generated primarily by artificial intelligence rather than written by the named author.
Writers should support factual claims with reliable sources when appropriate. The editorial staff may request documentation or additional information before publication.
Publication Decisions
Submission does not guarantee publication. The editorial staff may prioritize letters based on relevance, timeliness, originality, public interest, and available space. Additionally, the Branding Iron Staff reserve the right to not publish submitted material.
To encourage a range of voices, we may limit how frequently the same writer may be published. When multiple letters address the same topic, we may select a representative group rather than publishing every submission.
Letters represent the views of their authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the newspaper, its staff, or its affiliated institution.
How to Submit
Send letters to bi@uwyo.edu with the subject line “Letter to the Editor.”
Please include the letter in the body of the email or attach it as a Word document. By submitting a letter, the writer grants the newspaper permission to publish it in print, online, and on its social media platforms.
