Cowgirls soccer kicks off season

The Wyoming Cowgirls defeated the Weber State Wildcats Sunday afternoon at the Wildcat Soccer Field.

This win improved Wyoming’s record 3-1, while Weber State has a 0-3 record.

The Cowgirls’ first score came from a turnover from Weber State as forward Sara Paul crossed the ball to sophomore Lucie McDowell who kicked it in at the top of the box, her first goal of the year.

Wyoming continued to outshoot the Lady Wildcats 10-8 using balanced attacks to score five shots in each half of the game. Though the ball remained in Wildcat territory for a majority of the game, the Cowgirls tallied nine corner kicks to the Wildcats’ five.

Cowgirls Liz O’Reilly, Loren Mahoney, Sydney Joney and McDowell all had two shots each while freshman Mollee Ramsay and senior Carmen Blume each had one shot.

Carmen McDermott, goalkeeper for the Cowgirls, earned her first start of the year and her second win of the season after making two saves.

“I thought we played with a lot of energy and fight, which made a huge difference for us,” said Wyoming coach Pete Cuadrado.

“Our defense was much more sharp today and took away their scoring opportunities. We played better overall, so we’re pleased with the win.”

Wyoming will continue its pre-conference season with home matches beginning Friday at 4 p.m. against Nebraska Omaha and again on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Eastern Washington. Both games will be played at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
