Cross-country takes second in Colo. race

The Wyoming cross-country teams took second place Saturday morning at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder, Colo.

According to reports from Wyoming Athletics, the Cowboys earned 52 points to top Air Force (76) and Northern Colorado (114), while the Cowgirls scored 58 points to beat Northern Colorado (66) and Nebraska-Omaha (93).

Sophomore Holly Page led the women’s side with a ninth-place mark in 21:45 (5.8k), while redshirt freshman Aaron Derner led the Cowboys with a 16th-place 8k time of 25:54.

“It was a good meet for us and we raced with heart and effort on a tough course,” Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill said. “What I’m most pleased with is that we improved our times from a year ago at this race and had our top five runners on both teams run closer together, so we’re making progress and seeing great effort.”

Page earned five points for the Cowgirls in her placement and was followed by Christine Nelson, who arrived in 15th with a time of 22:14 to earn 10 team points. Abi Bever (21st, 22:44), Brooke Hughes (25th, 23:13) and Audra DeStefano (26th, 23:16) also registered team points for the Cowgirls with their marks, according to Wyoming Athletics.

Jessica Lemaster (37th, 23:41), Emily Swigart (38th, 23:43), Kyrsha Brisendine (64th, 24:43) and Courtney Madson (66th, 24:45) also competed for Wyoming.

For the Cowboys, according to Wyoming Athletics, Derner’s 16th place overall mark provided eight team points, with junior Garrett Zans following in 19th place in 26:03 for nine points. Senior Michael Banks finished in 25th place (26:48) for 10 points, while freshmen Michael Seas and Alex Pawlak earned points with their respective 27th- and 34th-place marks. Ken Lane (27:14) and Tyler Gifford (28:38) also competed for the Cowboys.

Colorado won both races as the its men’s team scored 15 points and the women’s team scored 19 points.

Wyoming has a week off from competition before competing at the Highlander Invite Oct. 13 in Riverside, Calif., to prepare for the MW Championship. The league race is slated for Oct. 26 in Las Vegas.
