Despite outshooting Fresno State and controlling the offensive tempo for the majority of the game, the Cowgirl soccer team fell to the Bulldogs by a 2-0 score Saturday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

With the win, Fresno State improves to 4-7-3 (2-0-0 MW), while Wyoming falls to 7-4-2 (0-1-1 MW) on the year. The Cowgirls outshot the Bulldogs by a 21-11 ratio and had nine shots on goal to FSU’s seven in the loss.

“We certainly had plenty of scoring opportunities but couldn’t put any into the net,” said Wyoming coach Pete Cuadrado. “I thought we played a great first half and controlled the momentum, but struggled early in the second half. Fresno State is a good team and took advantage of their scoring opportunities.”

Bulldog forward Morgan Castain scored both times for FSU for her fourth and fifth goals of the season. Her first came at the 35:22 mark following a Cowgirl attack that the Bulldogs defended and used to quickly advance the ball to the other side of the field.

Bulldogs Kayla Kret and Callie Hancock passed the ball on to Castain, who turned around and shot the ball from 30 yards out and put it into the upper left corner.

Castain’s second score came at the 58:30 mark of the second half after a scramble in the Cowgirl goalbox when FSU’s Vanessa Gonzalez took a shot that reflected off UW goalie Courtney Merkle and Castain snuck the rebound into the upper left corner for the 2-0 final score.

Bulldog keeper Katie DeVault improved her season record to 4-6-3, while Wyoming’s Merkle falls to 3-2-2.

The Cowgirls will use this week to prepare for two home games next weekend as they take on Nevada at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 and Boise State at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14.
