Battle is on for four candidates, Ward 1

On Tuesday, residents of Ward 1 will decide who they would like to represent them in the Laramie City Council. The candidates Matthew Blaylock, Vicki Henry, Erik Molvar and Paul Weaver will all vie for votes from West Laramie residents.

Matthew Blaylock is running under the slogan ‘invest in Laramie’s future.’ If elected he would pave roads in West Laramie and make a West Laramie business association, according to his website www.matthewblaylock.com.

“Economic development and youth programs would be my two top priorities if elected to city council. Blaylock told the League of Women Voters on his website. “We need to attract new businesses to Laramie; businesses that will help maintain our educated and experienced workforce in Laramie.”

Vicki Henry has lived in Laramie’s West Side Neighborhood for 17 years and has worked for the Laramie Planning commission more than six years, according to her website vickihenry.web.com.

“My main goal is for more parks for residents. They should be able to go to a natural area,” Henry said. “I feel that for me, we should be more in tune with the citizens. I really care about Laramie. I love it and I want to see it grow.”

Erik Molvar has served on the Laramie City Council as a ward five representative.

“I support public transit and want to see the bus service expanded to include the West Side and West Laramie. But the Transit Authority must put forward firm plans to address the major gaps in service that exist now, or they won’t get the votes needed to pass the initiative,” Molvar said in an interview with the League of Women Voters. “Maximizing Laramie’s quality of life is key. We should build around our small-town charm. Let’s plan carefully and guide development, maintaining historic districts and creating vibrant growth centers, while avoiding sprawl.”

Paul Weaver is the executive director of the Lincoln Community Center and member of the Laramie planning and zoning board.

“I would like to increase the communication between the Laramie residents and the city council and make their views count more,” Weaver said. “I would like to make bill paying easier and allow residents to pay their city bills online like how they pay their electricity bill.”

Ward 1 includes West Laramie, the West Side Neighborhood and extends east to Ninth Street, according to www.cityoflaramie.com.
