UW basketball vs. CSU

Guard Derrious Gilmore collides with a defender as he attempts a layup in Saturday’s game at Colorado State. Gilmore scored 26 points, but was the only Cowboy in double figures as forwards Washington and Nance scored only 9 and 3 points respectively. The Cowboys lost 65-46.

The roles seem to have reversed as the Cowgirls gained another win in their conference record and the Cowboys suffered another loss.

Both teams played border rivals the Colorado State Rams this weekend. The Cowgirls played at home while the Cowboys traveled to play at CSU’s Moby Arena. The women’s basketball team is now ranked 17-4 overall and 6-2 in the Mountain West Conference. The men’s team is ranked 15-6 overall and 2-6 in the MW.

Four Cowgirls finished the CSU game in double-figures, led by sophomore Kayla Woodward. She recorded 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists in her 40 minutes of play, according to UW athletics. Chaundra Sewell had 19 points and four rebounds, while Kailtyn Mileto and Fallon Lewis added 16 and 10 respectively.

While the Cowgirls have triumphed in their past four games, the Cowboys have taken four defeats.

The last win for the Cowboys was against San Diego State in January. The team has had setbacks this season, such as losing starter Luke Martinez after having some legal trouble. The team also brought on a lot of newcomers this season, which seems to have taken a toll on its roster.

During an interview with coach Larry Shyatt after the team’s last home game against New Mexico, he was asked if he felt good about where his team was at thus far in the conference.

“I feel great about this team,” Shyatt said. “I think anybody who observes the games these kids have played might find a hole here or there, but I’d find it very curious if someone didn’t feel good about our team.”

While people might not be questioning the team and the players’ talent, they might be questioning their ability to continue on for success in the MW conference tournament.

Both teams expect match-ups against Boise State this coming week, with the Cowgirls playing at home while the Cowboys hit the road.

Forward Ashley Sickles is fouled as she attempts a layup at Saturday’s home rivalry game against Colorado State. The Cowgirls won 82-76.

Boise has defeated both teams in games past, marking the first loss on the Cowboy’s previously undefeated record.

If both teams win, it will mean redemption and might be the boost they need for success in the conference tournament.
