Debt Week, a three-day long event promoting financial wellness, will kick off at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

The events will begin in the College of Business auditorium with the documentary “In Debt We Trust.” This film focuses on the reason behind America’s increasing debt. Domino’s pizza will be provided for those who attend.

Debt Week is sponsored by ASUW to help students better understand the world of finance.

“ASUW offers Debt Week to enhance campus’ knowledge on financial literacy and wellness. Right now, the program is fairly small but ASUW is partnering with other entities on campus to form a financial wellness committee to further pursue this and make the events bigger,” Chris Haakinson, ASUW Director of Finance, said.

On Thursday, events will go on all day in the Union Family Room starting at 9 a.m.

The event will begin with Will Wine from First Interstate Bank who will host a presentation on the importance of reconciliation and other banking features and at 10 a.m., First Interstate Bank will be handing out free items and educating students about its bank.

Other speakers will include Jim Ninnemann from Edward Jones, Mindy Uitterdyk from UniWyo Federal Credit Union and Danee Hunzie from the Admissions Office who will host a presentation on travelling abroad and budgeting trips.

Free lunch from Jimmy Johns will be served from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday. UniWyo will hand out free items from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and will educate students about what the federal credit union has to offer.

The big event for Debt Week is a presentation on foundational money challenges like spending, saving, budgeting and debt from Rachel Cruze of the Lampo Group. This presentation is the last of Thursday’s events and will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the College of Business Auditorium. Food from McAlister’s Deli will be provided.

“I believe the students can take away basic knowledge from Debt Week and apply what they learn to their basic finances,” Haakinson said.

Friday’s events run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with similarly focused presentations, free food and basket giveaways. A complete listing of events can be viewed at www.uwyo.edu/asuw.
