ASUW reinstates primary election

The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming approved its revised elections code on Tuesday, reinstating the primary election.

ASUW recently debated whether or not it should have both a primary and general election for its president and vice president and senators, but the revised rules will allow a primary election if deemed necessary.

The first readings for two pieces of legislation were also read during the meeting. Senate Bill 2387: Clarification of the Responsibilities of Sitting ASUW Senators is being presented because there is currently “no explicit standard that ASUW must follow, which could lead to poor representation of ASUW,” the bill reads. Senate Bill 2387 has been steered to the Constitution Committee and will have its second reading at ASUW’s meeting on Feb. 23.

The second piece of legislation that was read was Senate Bill 2388: Mandatory Senator Attendance at ASUW Funded RSO events. The bill has been steered to RSO Funding Board and will also have its second reading on Feb. 23.

ASUW President Joel Defebaugh also announced that the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will be Paula Lutz from Montana State University.

“I had the opportunity to talk with her and she was definitely one of the better candidates in the process,” Defebaugh said.

Lutz will be replacing B. Oliver Walter who has been the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since 1989.

ASUW Vice President Brett Kahler announced that tickets for the Mac Miller, New Boyz and Sean Kingston concert on April 13 will go on sale March 4 at the Union Information Desk. Tickets will be able to pick up one ticket for free and can pay for an additional ticket for their spouses for $20 if they so choose. Students will need to have their WyoOne cards swiped to pick up both tickets. Kahler said if students lose their tickets then they will not be able to get another.

“Lost tickets cannot be replaced because there is no guarantee that the student actually lost their ticket,” he said.

The first 600 students who get their tickets will be able to get standing room only tickets and the rest will be seating.

Kahler also announced that the new elections chair will be Cass Igo.

RSO Funding Board Chair Hunter Christensen also announced that the board allocated $500 to the Student Nurse’s Association for a conference as well as $500 to three different pharmacy organizations for their respective conferences.
