Cowgirls could go to NCAA

Senior Chaundra Sewell drives to the basket in the game against Weber State earlier in the season. The Cowgirls won the game 77-62.

Make no doubt about it: the Cowgirl basketball team is on fire this season with an 11 and four record of conference play and gearing up to take on the CSU Rams tonight in Fort Collins. Don’t think that this record is going to go unnoticed. The only team that has regularly bested the Cowgirls is the San Diego State Aztecs and the two teams will hopefully face each other once again in the Mountain West tournament. If the Cowgirls keep on playing consistently, The University of Wyoming could send the team to the NCAA tournament or host the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

I like to consider myself a life time Cowgirl even though my basketball career never took off beyond playing knock out in the junior high gym. I am the granddaughter of hall of fame Cowgirl basketball coach and radio color commentary host Margie McDonald. While I may have a hard time even making a layup and can’t imagine shooting from the three point line, I enjoy cheering on my team and love watching two teams face off in a fierce game, where shooting a free throw can make or break the game. I was in junior high when the Cowgirls won the WNIT tournament against Wisconsin in the Double A in 2007. The arena was packed with fans from all over the state in their game day gold. It was a defining moment of my year and I never touched a basketball. The team in 2007 worked hard both on and off the court and this season’s lineup possesses many of the same qualities.

The WNIT would be an opportunity for Wyoming to host a national tournament, meaning the Cowgirls could have the home court advantage complete with Pistol Pete and a full student section cheering them on.

The season is coming to a close and tournament season is rapidly approaching. The Cowgirls played their last home game against New Mexico but they will be back in action tonight in Fort Collins to play for the Border War and soon will head to Las Vegas in the Mountain West Tournament. From there they are looking to close the season with an invitation to the WNIT or perhaps even the NCAA tournaments. No matter how the end of the season ends up, this fan will be cheering them on all the way. Let’s go Cowgirls!
