The University of Wyoming Cowgirls will face a familiar foe in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain West Conference Championship, as they will play the Colorado State Rams tonight.

The Cowgirls (23-6) come in to the tournament as the number three seed, while the Rams (11-18) sit in the number six seed, with the winner moving on to the semifinals to play the winner of the quarterfinal between Fresno State (21-8) and Boise State (11-18).

This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season, and having a Border War in the conference tournament can only add intrigue to an already great match up.

The Cowgirls have held the upper hand in the meeting between the two teams this season, winning both contests by double digits. The first game ended in a 82-67 victory at home for the Cowgirls Feb. 2, while the second matchup ended similarly, with the Cowgirls coming out on top by a score of 65-51 March 6.

During the first meeting at home, four Cowgirls scored in double digits. Sophomore Kayla Woodward led the Cowgirls in scoring with 22 points and also added seven rebounds and six assists. Senior Chaundra Sewell added another 19 points and four rebounds, and sophomore Kaitlyn Mileto and junior Fallon Lewis added 16 and 10 points respectively.

When the Cowgirls played the Rams on the road, it was much of the same, as three Cowgirls scored in double digits on the evening. Sewell had a huge evening that ended in her recording her 11th double double of the season. She scored 22 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead the Cowgirls. Woodward also had a strong game, recording 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Ashley Sickles also added 10 points.

Thursday’s contest will mark the 89th meeting between the two bitter rivals. The game’s tipoff is set for 9:30 pm in the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
