Student Memorial Plaza funding

ASUW passed a bill allocating funds toward the Student Memorial Plaza at Tuesday’s meeting.

Senate Bill 2392 was proposed March 7 and now awaits signatures from ASUW President Joel Defebaugh and Vice President Brett Kahler to move forward.

The Student Memorial Plaza is a planned site to be erected adjacent to the Wyoming Union, Half Acre Gym and Prexy’s Pasture.

The Student Memorial is meant to honor and memorialize the loss of UW student lives. The inspiration behind the memorial is that students are, and will always be, Wyoming Cowboys.

“This is a project that alumni can get behind and help with funding. This isn’t a project that is all up to ASUW,” Defebaugh said.

ASUW is financially committed to the completion and dedication of the Student Memorial Plaza project through earmarked funds, outside fund raising and other appropriate sources.

“This legislation essentially changed the $125,000 earmarking of the Prexy’s Pasture statute to the memorial plaza,” College of Business Senator Mitch Nedved said. “The 99th senate that approved the statute had no way of anticipating all of the obstacles that would come about over the next year. Instead of letting the funds sit untouched for years to come, the money can be utilized now. It was perfect timing considering the renovations about to start on Half Acre.”
