The Cowboy football team worked on fundamentals and endurance during the second non-contact spring practice. Spring practice began last Tuesday.

It is time once again, football fans, to lace up those cleats, cinch up those shoulder pads and throw on those helmets, as spring training has started for the University of Wyoming Cowboy football team.

Spring practices began last Tuesday morning. The training sessions will continue until this semester ends. The completed sessions from last week were non-contact, with half and full-contact practices beginning this week.

Head Coach Dave Christensen, who is entering his fifth season at UW, returns to a mix of experience and youth for the 2013 season, with key figures on the offensive side of the ball ready to make an impact.

Quarterback Brett Smith, who will be coming in to his junior year this season, will once again lead the Cowboys. Smith is coming off a strong season, having racked up some nationally ranked statistics. Smith posted a 157.7 passer rating, which placed him at 11th in the NCAA in passing efficiency. He also ranked 16th in the nation in total offense (308.5 yards per game) and 21st in passing yards per game (283.7 ypg).

The Cowboys also have the luxury of returning starters at other key positions on offense. They will have their three leading running backs from last season at their disposal. Senior Brandon Miller and sophomores DJ May and Shaun Wick will be getting most of the carries for the Cowboys. They combined to rush for more than 1,000 yards last season.

Wide receiver slots will also be filled with veteran players who will bring some solid experience to the offense, with senior Robert Herron and juniors Dominic Rufran and Jalen Claiborne returning. But with all the returning pieces on offense, the Cowboys struggled on defense last year. The Pokes averaged 33.4 points against per game last season, which was 99th in the nation. Partner that with the 74th ranked offense as far as points scored per game (26.8 ppg) and it is understandable why the Cowboys finished just 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The Cowboys will have some holes to fill in what could be considered an inexperienced defensive side. They will have to replace seven starters, including All-Mountain West Conference defensive tackle Mike Purcell and their two leading tacklers from last season. Ghaali Muhammad had 106 tackles on the season and Korey Jones added 103.The remainder of spring practices will begin each morning at 8:30 a.m., and the Spring Game is scheduled for 2 p.m., April 27.
