While the Cowgirls tennis team came up short with one loss (4-3) against the Boise State Broncos over the weekend, they redeemed themselves by taking the win against the New Mexico Lobos and wrapped up their weekend with a 7-0 victory.

The Cowgirls are now 9-10 overall and 3-3 in Mountain West for their spring season.

“I was very happy with our performance this weekend,” Head Coach Dean Clower said. “We competed to the max and I couldn’t ask for more. I definitely feel we took steps forward as a whole; we just need a few breaks going our way. I believe you create your own luck and if we continue to play like this we will get lucky.”

The Cowgirls opened up the match against Boise State by winning the doubles point. Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova defeated Manuela and Marlena Pietzuch, 8-6, while Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova clinched the point with their 8-6 victory against Morgan Basil and Sandy Vo. Sophomores Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova lost to Megan LaLone and Bobbi Oshiro, 8-2.

In singles action, Marlena Pietzuch won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5 over Popovici to even it up at one all. Synkova defeated Vo, 6-2, 7-5, followed by Kovacs over Basil, 6-1, 6-3, to give Wyoming a 3-1 lead. Boise State rallied back as LaLone beat Nemcova in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, and tied it up after Sammie Watson won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, against Parizher. Wyoming came up short in the last match of the day as Zhelyazkova won the first set 6-3 but fell 6-4, 7-6 (7) against Manuela Pietzuch.

The Cowgirls opened up the next match the following day against New Mexico by also winning the doubles point. Popovici and Synkova defeated Michaela Bezdickova and Laura Richardson, 8-5, while Kovacs and Nemcova clinched the point with their 8-3 win over Michaela Oldani and Sarah Mahboob Khan. Sophomores Parizher and Zhelyazkova rebounded from yesterday and defeated Nikolina Grbac and Kristin Eggleston, 8-5.

The Cowgirls took every point in singles action against the Lobos. At the number one position, Popovici defeated Bezdickova, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5. She was followed by Synkova who defeated Grbac, 6-0, 6-0, and Kovacs over Khan, 6-2, 6-2. Nemcova won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, over Eggleston, and Parizher won against Oldani, 6-1, 6-2. Zhelyazkova won at the sixth spot, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.

“We will continue getting better like we have been doing the past month,” Clower said. “This team is one break away from winning this thing. We will look to continue getting better and peak at conference. That’s what I love about this team. Every girl we have competes to the max and I know they will be right in the thick of things.”

The Cowgirls will compete in Ft. Collins next weekend, which marks the end of their conference season. The team will play the San Diego State Aztecs Friday, and the UNLV Lady Rebels Saturday.
