The border war track meet in Gillette this coming weekend can speak to what the rest of the season will bring for the Cowboys and Cowgirls track and field team.

Statistically, the pokes’ chance of claiming their W against the rams looks good. Both teams have participated in invites so far where the amount of wins per team and the competition levels speak to the quality of the athletics programs.

CSU competed in the Air Force All Comers meet last Saturday. The meet hosted teams like Air Force, University of Colorado and Colorado Mesa. CSU competitors earned first place in six events.

UW hasn’t competed yet, but I’m putting my money on the brown n’ gold.

The men’s half of the track team looks promising this year, if only because of the amount of talent they’re getting back. The Cowboys are returning three athletes that qualified for the NCAA championships last season along with two that earned All-Mountain West distinction.

Mason Finley—the recent recipient of Mountain West Athlete of the Week honors—will look to build on his success from last season when he set the school’s shot put record with a throw of 65-9 3/4.

If Finley progresses as planned, and one or two of the Cowboys 15 newcomers steps up, they should finish in the top tier of the Mountain West this season.

The Cowgirls are also returning a good batch of talented athletes this season, with six former All-Mountain West winners on this year’s squad.

Senior hurdlers Taylor Gardner and Katy Hall should both be major contributors this season, and will likely lead the Cowgirls.

Much like their male counterparts, the Lady Pokes have a chance at a top spot in the conference if their underclassmen become a factor.

This Saturday the Wyoming Cowgirls and Cowboys track and field teams will host the Colorado State University Rams in Gillette for this year’s Border War. Based on the two school’s most recent meets, I predict that Wyoming will win a majority of the events. The Cowboys will win the Men’s 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles, long jump, and shot put, but the Rams will defeat the Cowboys in the 400-meter dash, high jump, pole vault, triple jump and weight throw. I predict the Cowgirls will beat the Rams in the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles as well as pole vault, long jump, shot put and weight throw. However, I think the Rams will beat the Cowgirls in the 400-meter dash, high jump, and the triple jump.
