Swimming, diving lose to Denver University

The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams returned to the pool Saturday afternoon after a 56-day break, and lost to Denver University in an away duel. The Cowgirls (6-2) lost 173-127, and the Cowboys (4-3) were defeated 173.5-126.5.

“It didn’t turn out the way we wanted today, but we had great fan support,” said Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson. “It was just really hard for us to get in rhythm after such a long break, but we had a great finish to the meet.”

Cowgirl divers Kari Campbell and Amanda Fay led the Cowgirls, breaking school records on their way to victories in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Fay’s win came after a personal-best score of 306.45 in the 3-meter. Campbell’s victory came with a personal-best and NCAA Zone diving qualifying mark of 280.40.

Junior Claudia Carlson led Cowgirl swimmers with a title in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.92. Junior Karen Hendrick finished the race second with a time of 2:07.12.

“Our butterflyers did a great job for us today, they were our strongest event,” said Johnson.

In men’s diving senior Derek Campbell, currently the Western Athletic Conference leader in the 3-meter springboard won the event with a score of 331.05. He also finished second in the 1-meter with a tally of 343.75, a personal-best.

“The divers did a great job and we are on the right track,” said UW diving coach Yahya Radman. “We still have a lot of work to do, but I’m excited to see what we can do the rest of the season.”

Sophomore Ryan Nelson and junior Adam Kalms stood out for the Cowboy swimmers. Nelson won the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:59.75—a season-best and a new school record. Kalms took home a title in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.26.

The Cowboys’ 200 freestyle relay squad of Kalms, sophomore Bryce Carter, junior Ryan O’Leary and senior Ethan Griffel won first in their event with a time of 1:22.78.

“Ryan and Adam had excellent days for us,” Johnson said. “Our relay teams were also great with the medley relay team putting up a great time for this part of the season.”

The Cowgirls return to competition next Saturday, hosting Border War rival Colorado State at noon in Corbett Pool.

The Cowboys are not back in action until Friday, Jan. 31 when they take on the Air Force Falcons on the road.
