ASUW discusses budget, upcoming events

ASUW LogoSenators arrived in the senate chambers dressed to the nines in their annual bow tie and pearls night for the meeting. The meeting was conducted in the same manner as the senators discussed the items in the agenda with the addition of special guest, Vice President of academic affairs, Maggi Murdock.

-Murdock talked with senators about what the academic affairs does (such as planning programs for each college, hiring staff and faculty, and budgets) along with President McGinty’s priorities for his term as president. His main focus lies on students, academic excellence, and statewide engagement. “We want students to leave the University of Wyoming feeling ready to compete in a global economy and have no restrictions in going after their goals,” said Murdock.

-President Kahler discussed Vice President Murdoch and his experience at the board of directors meeting. At the meeting the board donated $10,000 to the childcare scholarship, which President Kahler has been working on this semester.

-The scholarship for the China exchange program is due today. Applications are available on the ASUW website.

-The senators urged all to go visit the events taking place for African Awareness week throughout the campus.

-Vice President Murdoch encouraged senators to “gear up” for the upcoming elections for Fall 2014 term. She also advised graduating senators to “leave your position feeling good about what you did.”

-Senators passed two RSO fund requests. The first was given to the International Studies Club for their event, Adventures with Alison in the amount of $3,852.70. The second request was awarded to Spectrum for $2,600 to go towards their event to promote LGBT awareness.

-The international Studies Club event will have a speaker from National Geographic and famous filmmaker will come show two films for students. In the films, Alison demonstrates how she teamed up with students to show how different cultures live and their various aspects.

-Spectrum will host a event to promote awareness towards the LGTB community. This event will have a guest faculty speaker who will address the current issues facing the LGTB community. Food will also be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring their significant others to the event to help encourage awareness. The event hosted 250-300 people last year.

-Senators passed bill #2414 for the Senate Resolution. After a long discussion over an amendment towards the election process for senators, the decision for write up elections to be allowed was passed with the bill.

The meeting concluded with the many of the senators’ excitement over the Cowboys V. San Diego State basketball game.
