The Cowgirls had an off night last Saturday at the Taco Bell Arena.

A poor shooting game and numerous turnovers resulted in the 13 point loss to the Boise State Broncos. By the end of the game the Cowgirls shot for 40 percent from the field (18-for-45) and committed 18 turnovers, culminating in the disappointing 72-59 final score.

Much of the first half was a game of back and forth, as both teams fought to hold on to single-digits leads. The Cowgirls were able to keep the first half close-up until the last few minutes when the Broncos began to pull away, leading 30-20 with two minutes left. Boise dominated the final minutes of the first half only giving up three points and scoring 11 to end the first 20 minutes ahead 41-23.

“Boise State was excellent on offense in the first half,” said head coach Joe Legerski. “For us to not get stops defensively affects our transition game and easy opportunities for us at the basket. Committing 18 turnovers is uncharacteristic of this group, but definitely a key indicator of how this game went. We have a short turnaround and we will need to regroup quickly to play the last week of the season.”

The second half began where the first half left off. Wyoming went on a four-minute scoring drought to start things off. Junior guard Kaitlyn Mileto was the first Cowgirl to put points up on the board.

Senior guard Fallon Lewis followed Mileto’s jumper with a shot from beyond the arc and a lay-up to cut Boise’s lead to 14. Lewis fouled out of the game with 12:38 left in the second half; she ended the night with 10 points and four rebounds.

Boise dominated the board after Lewis fouled out, holding their lead to double-digits for the rest of the night. The Broncos pulled ahead by 24 points with 10 minutes left in the game.

Junior forward Kayla Woodward contributed 14 points during the second half to help cut the Broncos’ lead to 13 points, but that was as small as the gap would get. Woodward ended the night with 18 points and four rebounds.

There were big contributions from the Cowgirls’ bench. Senior guard Chelan Landry added 13-points to the final score, she concluded the game with back-to-back free throws. Landry shot for 87.5 percent at the line (7-for-8).

Junior forward Jordan Sibrel added a team-high five rebounds to the 29 other Cowgirl rebounds from the night.

The Broncos were lead by junior guard Deanna Weaver and junior forward Kayla Reinhart. Both juniors scored 13 points and Weaver recorded a team-high eight rebounds. Boise shot 45 percent in the paint (27-for-60) and 57.9 percent form beyond the arc (11-for-19).

The Cowgirls return to the Arena Auditorium this Tuesday, March 4 to take on the Utah State Aggies. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
