Sororities and fraternities on the University of Wyoming campus are joining forces this week to raise money for philanthropy and to bring the Greek community closer together.

“Since Relay for Life is at the end of the week, it just seemed natural to make it the philanthropy for the week,” said Juston Johnston, Director of Public Relations for the Interfraternity Council (IFC).

Greek Week is an annual event put on by the Panhellenic Council and the IFC, Johnston said. Johnston and Panhellenic VP of Communications Kali Hill coordinated the week.

“It’s a chance for all the chapters at UW to show their pride for Greek life,” he said, “and show the university that Greek life is really working to better the community.”

Johnston said the goal for the week is to raise $3,000. Mariah Hayden, Greek Week House Captain for Delta Delta Delta, said money is being raised by tabling in the Union breezeway and by chapters making donations.

“People can vote for their favorite team at the table in the Union by putting money in a red, white or blue jar,” she explained.

Johnston said there are competitions that bring together the chapters of Greek life. In past years, competitions have pitted all chapters against one another.

“We decided to promote involvement in Greek Week,” Johnston said. “It would be advantageous of us to put chapters with other chapters.”

Hayden said she believes having the three teams is helping Greek Week be more Panhellenic.

Among the events planned for the week are a knowledge bowl – held last night – sports activities today and a talent competition scheduled for Thursday evening. The week rounds out with the Relay for Life event and closing ceremonies on Sunday.

One of the activities on Wednesday is a Chariot Race, held on Prexy’s Pasture. Hill said each team needed to make a vehicle without motors or sharp objects that can carry one teammate and be pulled by two or more teammates. Whichever team is the first to complete two laps around Prexy’s wins the event.
