Decorating For the Holidays

Finally we are done with Thanksgiving! Guess what that means? We can put up our Christmas decorations without being judged! That is enough to make anyone excited.

This is the second year I haven’t been home for all of my Christmas break, and to be honest I have become a pro at decorating my own house.

Some things you need to remember to get you through this Christmas holiday alone are many and far in between. One tip would have to be that you are allowed to take your family traditions to school with you.

When I was little, up until about two years ago, my family and I would listen to Christmas music while we were decorating the tree. One song I remember listening to on repeat would be: “Alvin and the Chipmunks: All I want for Christmas”. We would dance around the Christmas tree singing this song. It was a blast.

The little things are what matter. Make them count while you are decorating for Christmas.

If you live in the dorms it may be hard to have a full-sized tree in that already crammed room. Some fun alternatives would be, getting a dwarf tree. These little trees are only about 12-24 inches high, so they fit very nicely on a desk. They also have mini ornaments to put on the mini tree. You cannot tell me this isn’t the cutest thing.

If you live in a house with a bunch of people, there are medium sized trees that you can put in your room. This is what I did in my room and my kitty loves it. She literally sleeps under the tree every night.

If you are one of the lucky pupils to have a one bedroom apartment, then you can set up a big tree in your living room. This is the ideal circumstance but not all of us college students have that luxury.

No matter what tree you may have, decorate it with many colors, and lots of lights. Last but not least don’t forget your tree topper!

Some of my best memories have been made on Christmas Eve with my family, going around and seeing all the awesome Christmas lights. Christmas lights are also how Santa knows where you live. If you are smart go put up some lights on the house.

If you live in a house, it will be easy to put some Christmas lights up, if you don’t want the hassle of getting on the roof, you can very well put some stand-up figures in your lawn. These are just as much fun.

If you live in an apartment, it is really fun to decorate your porch or balcony with lights, it’s super easy and usually only takes about one strand of lights!

If you live in the dorms this is where it gets a little tricky. But some fun ideas might be to decorate the inside of your window. Or you can get really creative and decorate underneath your bed and all around your room.

There is so much fun decorating traditions that you can very easily take to college with you! You may have to be a little creative when it comes to smaller spaces. Take these tips into consideration when you start to feel a little home sick this holiday season.
