Cowgirls Sweep Home Series

Cowgirls soccer had back-to-back wins on Sunday in two indoor home games against the University of Northern Colorado Bears, and Colorado School of Mines, each by a single goal, 1-0.

The Cowgirls have opened their spring season 3-1, having only allowed three goals in the last four games, and holding a shutout double-header this weekend.

“Our focus was to continue to build on playing quality soccer, and cleaning up details leading to more consistent play,” Cowgirls head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “I thought the first half against UNC we were a little slow out of the gate. But we responded well in the second half and the game against Mines.”

Sunday’s first game kicked off at 10 a.m. against the UNC Bears in the Indoor Practice Facility.

The lone goal of the game came from Cowgirl Shaina Ashouri, a new comer to the Cowgirls spring roster. Ashouri joined the Cowgirls roster in December after playing her freshman year at the University of Pittsburgh. There she played midfielder and played over 500 minutes in the 18 games she played for the Panthers.

Ashouri found her offensive niche against the Bears, Sunday, and drove the win home for Wyoming.

“This weekend’s wins helps with confidence, both of those games are not easy games and to get wins in both is a good day,” Coach Cuadrado said. “We are beginning to get more consistent with our play for longer periods which keeps us in every game. A lot of players have played well and we are becoming more consistent with not only our effort but our technique.”

Game two kicked off at 2 p.m. and followed a similar pace to game one.

Cowgirls defense held the Colorado School of Mines on the outskirts and freshman Cowgirl Kaitlyn Lomsnes hit the game-winning goal in game two.

Lomsnes made quite a splash for the Cowgirls in the fall, a trend Wyoming is hoping to see more of. The freshman led the team in goals with 10 for the fall season and proved to be an offensive force not to be reckoned with to her Mountain West competitors. In the fall postseason, Lomsnes was named the 40th-best freshman in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com, the only Mountain West Player in the top 100.

“We created a lot of chances in front of net. We did a good job of trying to execute the game plans and the next step for us with games like that is to find a way to get that second goal and put the game out of reach,” coach Cuadrado said. “[I want to focus on] putting away a few more chances and quality shots when we get them.”

The Cowgirls will return to their spring play Saturday when they host CSU-Pueblo in the IPF, kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
