Wyoming tennis beats Utah State to open Mountain West play

The Cowgirls opened up Mountain West play and defeated the Utah State aggies with a 5-2 victory on Friday March 27th.

“We started off the conference season playing the way we needed to,” head coach Dean Clower said to a Wyoming press release.

The Cowgirls jumped out early to a 1-0 lead by winning two out of three doubles matches. At the number three position, Dorottya Jonas and Silviya Zhelyazkova defeated Sabrina Demerath and Nini Guensler, 6-1 followed by a 6-3 victory by Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva over Lexi Turley and Meghan Lyall. Jessica Parizher and Magdalena Stencel lost 6-3 to McKenzie Davis and Maggie O’Meara.

“We are pleased with how we came out in doubles and showed a lot of maturity in singles,” Clower said to a Wyoming press release.

Parizher defeated O’Meara, 6-3, 6-2, to begin singles action and put the Cowgirls up 2-0 in the match. Utah State earned its first and only points of the day as Davis beat Stencel in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, followed by Guensler beating Nastya Tokareva, 6-4, 6-3, to even up the match at two all. Wyoming came back by winning the final four matches of the day. Gecheva needed three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, to beat Lyall followed by Zhelayzkova with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 win over Demerath. Jonas finished off the match with a thrilling, 6-7, 7-5, 10-5 victory against Kallie Sperry at the number three spot.

Wyoming will return to action on Friday, April 10 as it hosts the New Mexico Lobos. The match is set for 3 p.m. MT at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.
