Cowgirls advance to 4-1 in spring season

Cowgirls soccer closed out their home stretch of the spring season, winning their last three games in a shutout.

CSU Pueblo fell 6-0 in the Louis M. Madrid Stadium, Saturday against the 4-1 Cowgirls.

“We’re dangerous,” Cowgirls head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We were putting balls in good spots and getting our heads on things that earlier in the game that we weren’t getting our heads on. Just a little more aggressive in front of the net and making sure we’re finishing our chances”

The outing featured goals from sophomore defender Brooklyn Chambers, redshirt freshman midfielder/forward Candace Sciberras, redshirt freshman defender/midfielder Kimmy Burbank and sophomore forward Laurel Ramer. Both Chambers and Sciberras had two goals each.

Saturday’s game was played in a series of three periods, the first two 40 minute halves, and an extra 25-minute period added as well.

In the first half both teams had notable shots on goal. CSU Pueblo had a close call early in the first half. A cross from the left field placed the goal right inside the goalie box, but Wyoming’s keeper did not give the Thunderwolves a chance to execute.

Wyoming knocked around four attempts on goal before the first point of the game.

With 12:20 on the clock in the first half, following a pass from freshman forward Kayla Cryer, Chambers found the open lane and kicked the ball from midfield to give the Cowgirls the first advantage of the match.

Wyoming’s second goal came with seven minutes left on the clock in the first half. Sciberras was set up for a direct kick in the far right corner of the outer box, she crossed it to the left goal post and was met by a cash of Cowgirl offensive pressure to put Wyoming up 2-0.

In the second half both teams battled to find a goal, but the 40 minute dry spell was unbroken by either team.

In the additional third period the Cowgirls came on the field with a revamped energy.

“We just calmed down a little bit a game and figured out how to create space against them,” coach Cuadrado said. “I think they’re an aggressive team that will chase the ball a lot and I think when we started to open up some space it gave us time on the ball and that made life a lot easier for ourselves.”

Over the next 25 minutes the Cowgirls put back four goals and held the Thunderwolves to a shutout game.

In the 15th minute the third goal of the game came from Candace Sciberras as she put it back into the left side of the goal with no assist.

With seven minutes on the clock from an assist off of Chambers, Kimmy Burbank put in a header for Wyoming’s fourth goal of the day, followed by a putback by Chambers following a Wyoming corner kick for goal number five.

Wrapping it up for the day was Sciberras with less than a minute to play with their sixth and final goal, senior defender Casey Curtis had the assist.

“When we get ready next week for South Dakota State and for Nebraska we’re going to have to be solid defensively,” coach Cuadrado said. “Those are two very good teams. Similar to when we played Colorado, we were pretty solid that day defensively. We’re going to have our hands full with that and that will be something we focus on this week.”

Next week the Cowgirls will return to action in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 12th where they face Nebraska at 9 a.m., followed by South Dakota State at 1 p.m.
