Dr. Ray Reutzel has been hired as the new College of Education dean. Reutzel is a UW alumnus and currently a distinguished professor of elementary and early childhood education and director of the Emma Eccles Jones Early Childhood Education Center at Utah State University.

The College of Education selected Ray Reutzel as its new dean last week.

Reutzel is a University of Wyoming alumnus, receiving his bachelors in early childhood and elementary education from UW, his masters in reading and elementary education from Utah State University and his doctorate in language arts and elementary education from UW. Bret Sorensen, assistant lecturer and Technology coordinator for the College of Education, said he thinks Reutzel will be an excellent Dean.

“Dr. Reutzel brings several strengths with him as our incoming dean. In addition to the strong academic and administrative backgrounds he has, I like that he—previous to applying for this position—already had ties to the University of Wyoming, and as such has a vested interest in seeing

Dr. Reutzel himself said he is excited to assume his new position and looks forward to hearing feedback from all levels in the College of Education. Reutzel also said he is interested in learning of the college’s strong and weak points from students themselves.

“I am very pleased to be coming back to my Alma Mater as dean,” Reutzel said.

Reutzel also said he hopes to work toward the Trustees’ Education Initiative.

“The challenge of the UW Trustees’ Education Initiative to become a nationally preeminent College of Education in the preparation of educators will require a complex and multifaceted effort involving many internal and external stakeholders, not the least of which will be hearing feedback about the strengths and weaknesses of our programs from current students in the College of Education.”
